Kuala Lumpur

More than any other spot in the country, Kuala Lumpur, or "KL" as it is commonly known, is the focal point of new Malaysia. While the city's past is still present in the evocative British colonial buildings of the Dataran Merdeka and the midnight lamps of the Petaling Street nightmarket, that past is met with insistent reminders of KL's present and future.

The city's bustling streets, its shining, modern office towers, and its cosmopolitan air project an unbounded spirit of progress and symbolize Malaysia's unhesitating leap into the future. Like Malacca five hundred years before, KL's commercial centre is a grand meeting place for merchants and travelers from all over the world.

In the same way, the city brings together Malaysia's past and present, its many constituent cultures, and even its remarkable natural treasures, allowing first-time visitors an invaluable opportunity to see Malaysia as a whole before setting off to explore its parts.

In the botanical and bird parks of the Lake Gardens, one is treated to a first glimpse of the unsurpassed beauty and variety of Malaysia's plants and animals. In the vibrant Central Market, music, crafts, and cultural practices from Kelantan to Sarawak can be explored and experienced.

Many large worldwide hotel chains have presence in the city. KL has also developed into an international shopping destination with a wide variety of shopping centres and mega malls which carry well-known global and local brands. Conference tourism has also expanded in recent years and is becoming a very important component of the industry.

Major destinations include the House of Parliament, KL Tower, Putra World Trade Centre, Dataran Merdeka, Tugu Negara, Istana Negara, Istana Budaya, mosques such as the Masjid Negara and the Federal Territory Mosque, Muzium Negara, and other tourist attractions including Aquaria KLCC, Makam Pahlawan, National Science Centre, Eye on Malaysia, Zoo Negara, Batu Caves, and events such as the Chinese cultural festivals at the Thean Hou Temple and the Thaipusam procession at the Sri Mahamariamman Temple. The Golden Triangle, the commercial hub of the city, contains the Petronas Twin Towers and has a distinctive nightlife.

Trendy nightclubs, bars and lounges, such as Hard Rock Cafe, Zouk, Thai Club, Beach Club (voted Best Bar in Asia), Luna Bar, Rum Jungle, Nuovo, Espanda and many others are located within and around Jalan P. Ramlee, Jalan Sultan Ismail and Jalan Ampang.

Some KL Sights

Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC)
Shopping is KLCC's main feature and the most popular mall in the area is the Suria KLCC Shopping Mall nestled between the Petronas Twin Towers. This mall is one of the Klang Valley's most popular places for shopping and is also a hang-out for all walks of life; young and old.

Bukit Bintang
Bukit Bintang is famous for its many shopping opportunities. This area is so popular simply because it caters for almost every taste and budget when it comes to shopping. You'll be spoilt for choice by the endless array of fashion goods and merchandise here!

Chinatown
Also known as Petaling Street; KL’s Chinatown is not just known as a stronghold of Chinese culture, but what really makes it popular is the fantastic shopping opportunities in an open-air bazaar-like environment. Petaling Street is indeed a bargain-hunter's paradise!

Little India
KL’s own Little India is found along Masjid India Street which is near Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman. A short stretch of Indian shops are the trademark of this place, retailing traditional Indian goods such as milk, breads, flower garlands and Bollywood music.

Kampung Baru
The oldest Malay residential area in KL, Kampung Baru was founded in 1899. There are still authentic traditional Malay wooden houses there, a sharp contrast to the concrete houses and high-rise apartments of KL. On Saturday evenings, one section of Kampung Baru is a hive of activity with the Pasar Minggu, or Sunday Market. Starts from 6 p.m. on Saturday evenings and ends in the wee hours of Sunday morning at 1 am. This market has a totally Malay feel to it, and this is obvious in the style of jewellery and clothes, the fabrics, the handicrafts and aromas of Malay cooking.
