Sepang, 1 July 2013 - KL International Airport (KLIA) celebrated its 15th anniversary this year and the airport will continue to play a major role towards the development of the nation. Since its opening in 1998, KLIA has enjoyed many accomplishments on both the domestic and international front, strengthening its position as one of the well-known airports around the globe.
In his speech, Y.Bhg. Dato' Azmi Murad, Malaysia Airports' Senior General Manager of Operations Services said, "Our strong relationships and collaborations with everyone in the airport community are key determinants to our success in achieving the goal of becoming a world-class airport service provider. We are grateful to all our partners, such as the Government Agencies, retailers and concessionaires, airlines, suppliers and vendors for putting such a tremendous effort to make KLIA amongst the best in the air travel industry."
KLIA certainly will play a prominent role in Malaysia Airports' effort towards building a world class airport businessthrough its corporate blueprint, Runway To Success, between the years 2010 to 2014. The accomplishment of the three strategic pillars underlined in Runway To Success - Traffic Growth, Service Excellence and Commercial Development are aligned with the performance of KLIA.
With klia2 targetted to be ready next year and set to seize advantage of the rapid growth of the low-cost carrier industry in the Asian region, the future is looking bright and promising for KLIA. klia2 will be a catalyst for innovative new offerings, including an air-ground multi-modal transportation interchange and a suite of airport city facilities.
In the first half of 2013, KLIA has welcomed five new airlines - Thai Smile, Malindo Air, Air France, Turkish Airlines and Philippine Airlines. For the first five months of 2013, KLIA registered a total of 18.2million of passenger movements, representing a 14.1% growth compared to the same period in 2012.
Last year KLIA has recorded a healthy growth of 5.8% in passenger movements and 5.2% in aircraft movements compared to 2011, which was strongly attributed to a number of factors such as increased number of flight frequencies, commencement of new routes from the airlines partners and the success of our airline incentive programme. To further illustrate this growth, KLIA has recorded a total of 39.8 million passengers in 2012, approaching the airport's capacity of 40 million passengers per annum.
Therefore, in commemorating its 15 years of achievement and showing its appreciation to passengers for using the airport, KLIA feted five lucky passengers in a simple yet special reception. The lucky passengers were chosen based on these criteria:-
i) The 42 millionth Passenger at LCCT - KLIA (Domestic)
ii) The 56 millionth Passenger at LCCT - KLIA ( International)
iii) The 120 (MTB+LCCT) millionth Passenger at KLIA (Domestic)
