KL International Airport Adopts Runway Green In Annual Fashion Extravaganza
29 November 2011
Sepang, 29 November 2011- Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (Malaysia Airports) is extending its green initiatives beyond airports infrastructure and
buildings to include a broader cross-section of its practices and services.
The airport operator is deepening its commitment to sustainability and environment responsibility by encouraging commercial retailers to consider sustainable and ethical approaches in product offerings as well as sales initiatives. It is leading the way at its premier fashion event iStyle Fashion KL International Airport 2011 which carries the theme "Runway Green".
In launching the annual fashion extravaganza, Puan Faizah Khairuddin, Senior General Manager, Commercial Services, said that iStyle Fashion 2011 underscores Malaysia Airports' positioning KLIA as a premier international lifestyle destination while, at the same time, open participants and sponsors to the new challenge of being socially responsible in their approaches, products and practices.
"In the year 2004, KLIA was the first and only airport in the world to receive the Green Globe certification, recognizing KLIA's commitment to promote environment responsibility. Through iStyle, we hope to upscale our commitment to include a widen segment of our operations.
"Our aim, which is also part of our corporate responsibility, is to unearth and further expose our young designers and our concessionaires to this growing and new trend that will impact them and their future. We want to pique their interest and imagination to the possibilities present in eco-fashion and eco-retailing," said Puan Faizah.
iStyle Fashion KL International Airport is the only fashion styling event of its kind to be held at an international airport. First held in 2009, the event provides budding fashion design students with a platform to put in practice their learning and showcase their talents and creativity with KL International Airport as their fashion playground.
The event is open to all aspiring and student designers between 18-25 years old. These designers compete against each other in teams of three per team. Each team comprises a designer, a stylist and a publicist. While the designer and stylist are required to create and project specific looks according to the given themes in three rounds of heats and one Grand Finale, the publicist's role is to market the team via various social media platforms to garner votes.
A total of 39 teams have signed up of which 37 teams are from design schools and two teams comprising a combination of design students and new aspiring designers. Only six teams were shortlisted to compete at iStyle Fashion KLIA 2011.
"The competition this year is made all the more challenging because of the green theme. First and foremost, the finalist teams will have to undergo three rounds of heats, each focusing on a different recyclable material - paper, plastic and metal. On top of that they have two special challenges - creating a signature feature piece - Runway Green Couture - using a green material of choice; and designing a Green Shopping Bag which Malaysia Airports may adopt for future use at our airports. It would be a very compressed and intensive time for all and a test on their creativity and management abilities," added Puan Faizah.
The focus of the three rounds of heats is: Heat 1: "Not Just PaperKids" with paper as the primary material source; Heat 2: "Style with ResinMen" focusing on the use of plastics; and Heat 3: "Allure-Chicas" where metal is a key component.

The Chief Judge/Mentor for iStyle Fashion KL International Airport is prominent stylist Cris Yong. A different panel of judges has been identified for each round of heats and the Grand Finale. Among them are Nik Anis Nik Zakaria, General Manager Corporate Communications of Malaysia Airports, Puan Faizah Khairuddin of Malaysia Airports, Jonathan Liang, Tengku Syahmi and Rico Rinaldi.
In addition, Yasmin Rasyid, President and Founder of EcoKnights, has also signed on as the event's Green Consultant.
Commented Puan Faizah: "I hope what we have started via iStyle Fashion 2011 will be carried forward and applied by all and that, one day, many of these new designers would have their sustainable fashion featured at all our international airports in Malaysia and worldwide ."
Members of the public will also be able to find out more about sustainable and ethical fashion and products at a green display set up by The Body Shop and Green Earth at Level 5 of the Main Terminal Building of KL International Airport. On display would be eco-friendly musical instruments, baby clothing, stationery, personal hygiene items and household products.
