20 August 2009

Kuala Lumpur, 20 August 2009 - Enterprise Asia has awarded Malaysia Airports with the prestigious Community Engagement Award in the Asia Responsible Entrepreneurship Awards (AREA) 2009 Malaysia, in recognition of Malaysia Airports' commitment towards the betterment of the surrounding community which they operate in.

The award was presented to Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, during the Asia Pacific Entrepreneurship Awards 2009 on 20 August 2009, held in Kuala Lumpur. Enterprise Asia's AREA recognises and honours Asian businesses for championing sustainable and responsible entrepreneurship in four categories, and one of the categories is Community Engagement Award.

On receiving the award, Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said: "Malaysia Airports is very pleased to be recognised by Enterprise Asia with this award. It is always our mission to continuously contribute towards the improvement of surrounding community that we operate in, in our case, community near to the airport."

Malaysia Airports has actively been involved in various Corporate Responsibility (CR) initiatives covering all aspects of community, environment, workplace and marketplace. These programs or initiative are designed to deliver sustainable value to society at large, as well as to stakeholders. Beyond Borders is the flagship program for the community relations effort.

Malaysia Airports' Beyond Borders is part of the PINTAR school adoption program by Khazanah, whereby nine schools in the proximity of airports in Penang, Kedah, Selangor, Kelantan, Pahang, Sabah and Sarawak, have been adopted. Beyond Borders has significantly helped improve the academic level and build self-motivation of involved students based from feedback received from the teachers of the adopted schools.

Beyond Borders is also aspired to empower the students to change and take the leap to go beyond their borders in pursuit for a better future. Malaysia Airports have constantly been working hand in hand with the schools to ensure that not only all students embrace this belief, but also their parents and teachers.

Tan Sri Bashir elaborated: "We hope our commitment in improving the education level at these schools will further stimulate the students, and also the teachers, to improve their performance from time to time. Should they excel, it will be a great testament in our effort to improve their education level and thereafter, their future. This will also represent the success of the community itself."

Malaysia Airports has thus far committed their resources, including its employee's time as volunteers/mentors as well as third party involvement to work with and motivate the children.

Malaysia Airports has also been actively involved in other Corporate Responsibility initiatives as well. It has led the Green Globe 21 Certification program which is the international benchmarking and certification program that advocates best green practices in the travel and tourism industry.
