SEPANG – Malaysia Airports has lined up 18 awards for airlines and service providers operating at the KL International Airport (KLIA) to honour partners with exceptional performance for the year 2011.
KLIA Awards is the ideal platform for Malaysia Airports to reward its partners that have capitalized on the strong recovery of the global aviation industry last year by further enhancing their performances and services. The presentation of the KLIA Awards is aimed at recognizing and motivating all KLIA business partners that relentlessly push the boundaries of distinction in their fields, enabling KLIA to further advance in service excellence.
KLIA Awards winners are chosen based on their 2011 feat in sectors such as passenger movement, growth factor, sales performance, international recognition as well as their service performance. The awardees receive a custom-made trophy bearing their winning categories.
KLIA Awards was first introduced in 2006. It is the sole award ceremony in the country that pays tribute to the best performers in aviation industry and has gained reputation as one of the most important events in the calendar of the nation’s aviation industry.
Y.Bhg. Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah, Chairman of Malaysia Airports who represented Dato’ Seri Kong Cho Ha, Minister of Transport in his speech, paid tribute to the aviation industry's role towards the country, “The national aviation industry’s role in the economy is crucial to national development and global integration. It offers a vital contribution with a high multiplier effect to our country’s economy in terms of tourism, infrastructure and logistics development. Echoing the sentiment of our Prime Minister on the significant role played by this industry to our economy, we continue to propose and strategize for more bilateral arrangements in order to increase international connectivity in our airports.”
He also commended Malaysia Airports in its effort to value and to reward its business partners, “I applaud Malaysia Airports for organising the annual KLIA Awards as an effort to recognise excellent performances of all partners at KLIA. I hope these awards will further motivate the KLIA community to continue in being the best in what they do and I call for the community to come together hand in hand to achieve once again the ‘World’s Best Airport’ recognition for KLIA.”
Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports, highlighted KLIA’s fine performance last year, “KLIA experienced a 10.6% growth in passenger movements compared to 2010, recording a total of 37.7 million passengers, in tandem with the growth of the tourism sector in the country. KLIA also welcomed three new airlines in 2011 – Air Koryo, Lion Air and Transaero Airlines.”
2012 has so far been a good year for KLIA. KLIA’s staff was acknowledged for excellence when it won the Best Airport Staff Asia Award in the SKYTRAX 2012 World Airport Awards, the most prestigious accolades for the world airport industry. KLIA also improved its place in the world’s top 10 airports with an 8th place finish, one spot better than last year.
KLIA has also welcomed Bangkok Airways, Mandala Airlines and Airphil Express into its family this year and currently hosts 59 international airlines offering connections to more than 100 international destinations worldwide.
This year, KLIA welcomed the A380 aircraft. MAHB took the initiative to upgrade KLIA a few years ago to meet the requirements of such large aircraft operations. This is to cater for the premium passengers. In the case of the low fare travel, this segment of the traffic has continued to grow significantly and now forms about 50% of the total traffic. Likewise, Malaysia Airport's foresight in seeing the potential of low fare travel and constructing a dedicated terminal for low-cost airlines as well as providing growth incentives and allowing exemptions to meet the low-cost business model at the advent of the low-fare travel phenomenon, has now began to show the benefits to the traveling public and the country.
In line with Malaysia Airports’ emphasis to continuously enhance and drive the service excellence culture at KLIA, Malaysia Airports introduced a new award category, the ‘Service Excellence Award’ last year for the highest score in the global benchmark Airport Service Quality (ASQ) elements – for agencies. This year, the award is further expanded with inclusion of another category to honour the agency with the most improved score in the ASQ elements.
Tan Sri Bashir added, "To be among the World’s Best Airport is a reflection of not only KLIA’s standing, but also of its people and all partners and agencies at KLIA that ultimately mirror the nation's standing. We believe that collectively with everyone’s effort and cooperation, KLIA can continue to rise among the best airports in the world.”
Ending his speech, Tan Sri Bashir expressed his gratitude to all within the KLIA community for their continuous support towards the management of Malaysia Airports throughout the years, which has been the driving force to elevate KLIA to greater heights.
The grand event is attended by approximately 350 guests at the Pan Pacific Kuala Lumpur International Airport.
