Malaysia Airports Wins Bid to Host ACI World General Meeting

Subang, 20 November 2006 - Malaysia Airports successfully won the bid to host the 19th World and Regional Assemblies 2009 at Kuala Lumpur. This is the third bid won by Malaysia Airports after hosting the first Routes Asia in 2003 and the World Routes Forum to be held in 2008.

The news was announced in Cape Town, South Africa during Airport Council International (ACI) 16th World Annual General Assembly, where Malaysia Airports participated. Some 700 participants from the aviation industry attended this year's meet, themed Airports Mean Business.

Y. Bhg. Dato Seri Bashir Ahmad, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports said: "This is an honour and recognition for Malaysia Airports as a leader in the industry. It also reflects prestige for a Malaysian company to be internationally recognized."

He added: "Some of benefits to Malaysia as the host will include showcasing the airport worldwide as well as promoting Malaysia as a tourist destination."

At the Cape Town General Meeting, Managing Director, Dato Seri Bashir Ahmad Abdul Majid was elected to sit as a Member of the World Governing Board effective January 2007. Recently in May this year, he was already appointed to ACI's Asia-Pacific Regional Board.

The 2007 World General Assembly will be held in Buenos Aires, Argentina followed by Boston, USA in 2008.

ACI is "the Voice of the World's Airports" established in 1991. It is an international body that campaigns airport interests and also promotes professional excellence in airport management and operators.

ACI ensures maintaining and a developing safe, secure, environmentally compatible, efficient and prospering air transport system. Currently, its membership comprises 1650 airports in 176 countries.

The voting members of the World Governing Board decide ACI policies and meet twice a year. Policies include airport interests (management, operations, future developments, service standards and airlines relations).
