LCCT-KLIA Named Low Cost Airport of the Year

Singapore, 9 November 2006 - It's another bouquet for Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (Malaysia Airports), when it's newly opened Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT-KLIA) was named CAPA Low Cost Airport of the Year at the CAPA Aviation Awards for Excellence here tonight, barely seven months after it started operations.
The CAPA Low Cost Airport of the Year, introduced for the first time this year, is awarded to the Low Cost Airport or Terminal that has been at the forefront of change in this region, which understands and adapts to the needs of the LCC sector.
According to Mr Peter Harbison, Executive Chairman of Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA): "KL International Airport (KLIA) established its dedicated LCC facilities in record time, providing a terminal well suited to the needs of the fast-growing LCC sector.
"KLIA is well positioned to be a key player in this sector and we congratulate them on being named CAPA Low Cost Airport of the Year," he added.
Malaysia Airports Managing Director, Dato Seri Bashir Ahmad, on receiving the Award said that it was rewarding to receive this award as the LCCT-KLIA had just started operations.
"I guess what we had going for us, especially those working at the Terminal, was the ability to overcome any teething problems in record time and work towards ensuring that passengers get the most from the terminal's facilities and be as comfortable as they possibly can while waiting for their flights or upon their arrival.
"This Award has spurred us to work even harder to maintain the LCCT's standing as the best in the Asia-Pacific. To all staff and service providers at the LCCT-KLIA, thank you for making this Award possible. And to CAPA and its advisory panel, thank you for acknowledging this," Dato Seri Bashir added.
Built on a fast track basis within nine months, the construction of the LCCT-KLIA began in June 2005 at an approximate cost of RM108million, fully funded by the Government of Malaysia.
The terminal is an extension to the existing facilities of KLIA which recently bagged the World's Best Airport Award by AETRA in the 15-25 million passengers per annum category. The opening of this LCC terminal, which can cater up to 10 million passengers per year, makes KLIA a complete and integrated airport to meet the needs of passengers of all categories.
Currently, 4.8 million passengers have passed through the LCC terminal and this figure is expected to increase by year end. Airlines currently utilising this terminal are AirAsia, Thai AirAsia and AWAIR.
