klia2 gains momentum towards opening next year

Sepang, 16 October 2013 - Barely a week after the successful trial landing at Runway 3, klia2 continues to gain momentum towards its opening in May next year when Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (Malaysia Airports) held a ceremony to accord recognition to commercial business partners who have shown admirable support and commitment towards the klia2 retail brand identity. The ceremony also beckoned the entrustment of Commercial Fit Out Guidelines to klia2's commercial business partners to ensure state of readiness for renovation works for the respective retail, F&B and services outlets in view of the upcoming handover of site possession.
YB Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi, Deputy Minister of Transport, Malaysia was present to award the Certificates of Recognition and the Commercial Fit Out Guidelines to the following top 10 commercial business partners for their unwavering support and pledge towards meeting the expectations of both the brand personality and brand principles of klia2 as well as to creatively invest in local development and growth:-

Over 45 retailers, 26 F&B operators, 12 service providers and 4 companies under the Corporate Social Responsibility Programme will soon receive their respective Commercial Fit Out Guidelines. Datuk Abdul Aziz said, "This is a very crucial step in ensuring that the business partners are prepared and will be ready to receive the site possesion of their respective commercial lots, to undergo renovations from December 2013 onwards. The business partners will be given 2-3 months to complete their renovations by 15 March 2014 for final inspection, in order for klia2 to be operational by 2 May 2014 as planned."
When operational, klia2 will welcome up to 45 million people into what would be the world's largest purpose-built terminal dedicated for low-cost carriers. It will underscore our position as the fastest-growing aviation hub in this region and KLIA's status as the Next Generation Hub.
The design of klia2 took into consideration not only the operational requirements of airlines, but also the safety and comfort of passengers as well as the needs of Malaysia Airports' other partners such as the retail and F&B concessionaires and other stakeholders.
Described as an "airport within a mall", travellers at klia2 will have the opportunity to indulge in awe-inspiring retail therapy at the landside and airside areas of the terminal. Over 170 high-visibility retail, F&B and services brands will be operating at klia2 Terminal offering a wide range of upper middle products and brands to indulge a cross-section of travellers and shoppers.
Puan Faizah Khairuddin, Senior General Manager Commercial Services said, "klia2 is constructed with one of the highest percentage of retail space offered by any commercial airports. 12% of gross floor area (GFA) is dedicated to customer fronting commercial offerings whereby approximately 60% of total commercial offerings have been earmarked for Retail whilst the remaining 40% for F&B. On the first day of operations at klia2 terminal, occupancy is expected at 80% and that is inclusive of Corporate Social Responsibility awards."
"klia2 will be a highly-desirable venue for Malaysian and international brands to showcase their products and services, pushing the envelope in terms of travel retail and redefining the travellers' airport shopping experience. Its customers will not be just travellers and their families but also residents from the surrounding communities of Sepang, Putrajaya, Bangi and Nilai," commented Puan Faizah Khairuddin.
Travellers will start their journey as a 'Retail Explorer' from the public concourse area and be ultimately pampered with more variety and choices at the airside area that is after security and immigration check points.
The offerings at the public concourse area will have more F&B centric offerings, thus providing a wide array of F&B concepts and brands, fast food outlets, lifestyle café, casual dining restaurants and grab & go counters, which in totality offers a good range of local and international fare. While the retail offerings are basic travel needs such as pharmacy, books and gifting.
Travellers will be spoilt for choice at the restricted area as duty free offerings galore complemented by exciting and new retail concepts, ambiance and experience. Travellers can luxuriate in the spectrum offerings ranging from chocolate & confectionery, perfumes & cosmetics, fashion & accessories, gifts & souvenirs to beauty & wellbeing as well as satiate their appetite for the finest gastronomic experience.
Amongst the new and exciting retail brands in klia2 are BE, Beauty Collections, Cocoa King, Desigual, Men's Fashion Walk, Puffy Buffy, Quiksilver, Roxy, Taste and Treats and My Lifestyle Gallery. Dining concepts varies to cater to the needs of travellers. Brands making a debut for the first time in a local airport environment are Warung, Baab, Baskin Robbins, Bumbu Desa, Chatime, Nonya House, PappaRich, The Loaf, The Library, Uncle Lim's and Urban Food Court.
"We are well on trajectory to meet the retail aspiration for klia2. We want to change the mind-set of travellers, making them appreciate that their vacation begins and ends at klia2. We will work closely with our business partners to ensure that our customers will continuously explore klia2 as a destination," enthused Puan Faizah Khairuddin.
"All in all, 33% of the successful tenderers are completely new to the local airport commercial environment. We have also recorded an astounding 40% of successful bumiputera tenderers, which is the highest composition in the current retail complexes. Thus, we have secured a balance mix of local to international brands which are familiar to our targeted segments. The success of the brands is further supported by the ability of many local retailers to debut such brands at klia2. The awards demonstrate Malaysia Airports' unwavering support towards the development and growth of local entrepreneurs," added Puan Faizah Khairuddin.
Datuk Abdul Aziz also said, "klia2 is poised to be another landmark in Malaysia that would do the nation proud. The airport retail experience championed by Malaysia Airports would add significant value and flavor to building Malaysia as a preferred transit point and tourists destination."
Following the directive by the Minister of Transport, a Task Force for klia2 has been setup, headed by the YB Datuk Abdul Aziz Kaprawi. The Task Force has been having regular meetings and visits to ensure klia2 will be ready for take-off as promised.
