SUPER SIX SCHOOLS RUGBY FIFTEENS KICK OFF ITS 4TH SEASON
19 April 2017
KUALA LUMPUR - The ongoing Super Six Schools Rugby Fifteens which has entered its fourth season, has expanded into 14 teams. The tournament, which kicked off on April 1, is expected to end by 29 April ahead of Malaysia Airports Chairman’s Challenge Trophy semifinals.
The tournament has been expanded to14 teams, six teams from the preceding editions and the introduction of eight more new teams in Ragbi Perdana, another league under held under Super Six’s auspices as part of the tournament’s commitment in providing opportunities for schools to participate. Ragbi Perdana is Super Six’s collaboration with Persatuan Penggerak and Pembangunan Alumni.
Tournament director, Noor Helmi Nong Hadzmi, said:“The tournament has become a well-established platform in the schools rugby calendar and we’re excited to welcome players – both new and returning - to this year’s edition. We are proud to have loyal teams that have been participating in the tournament since its inception in 2013, which is testament to its success.”
The final of the tournament will be on May 13 and will be held at the International Islamic University in Gombak. The winner of the cup final will be crowned Malaysia Airports Chairman’s Challenge trophy champions.
Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (Malaysia Airports) has returned as the main sponsor of the tournament.
Malaysia Airports, in its statement mentioned, “Over the years, we have always focused our CSR initiatives that promotes education for or leadership building in students as part of our contribution to the nation. Sports is one such area that inculcates values such as determination to succeed and effort in teamwork - values that essential to a good leader. This is why Malaysia Airports returns again as the main sponsor for the Super 6 Tournament.”
“As a proud sponsor of the tournament, we are delighted that the tournament is now recognised and endorsed by the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Youth and Sports and the Malaysian Rugby Union.”
“We are also happy with the significant impact it brings towards the overall tournament scene and the players involved. To date, approximately 50% of the players who played in Super 6 tournament over the course of three years have made it to the state and national level. In fact, Super 6 has produced one of the top 10 best rugby players in Malaysia who is currently playing for Malaysia’s 7s team.”
Super Six is aimed at supporting school rugby by organising a 15’s tournament amongst the best rugby playing schools in Malaysia in view of the lack of such competition outside the biennial MSSM tournament.
All rugby tournaments currently being organised are for the 7’s and 10’s variant of the game.
The tournament is conducted over two stages, a round robin qualifying stage to establish the ranking of the six teams, and a playoff stage where the teams will play for Malaysia Airports Chairman’s Challenge Trophy.
In the qualifying round of the Super Six, the teams will play each other once. Upon completion of all the fixtures, the teams will proceed to the playoff stage where the top three schools qualify for the cup playoff, while the champion of ‘Ragbi Perdana’ (the new league) will complete the semifinal list.
