Prime Minister Visits Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport During Official Visit To Turkey

23 February 2011

Istanbul, 23 Febuary 2011 - Malaysia's Prime Minister, YAB Dato' Sri Mohd Najib bin Tun Hj. Abd. Razak paid an inaugural visit to Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport (ISGIA) while on his official visit to Turkey. ISGIA is one of the two major airports serving Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey.

The airport is managed and operated by Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport Investment Development and Operation Inc. (ISG), where Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB) has 20% equity in the company. The other partners are Limak Group (Limak) from Turkey and GMR Infrastructure Limited (GMR) from India, holding 40% equity each.

This is MAHB's first participation at an airport in Europe together with the Turkish company Limak. Besides being a shareholder, Malaysia Airports was involved in the provision of advisory and consulting services in the airport master plan, detail design study, and especially in the Operational Readiness and Airport Transfer ("ORAT") exercise.

The Prime Minister commented "The involvement of Malaysia Airports in this partnership is another milestone to further extend Malaysia Airports' expertise in airport development and management services to airports abroad and also serves as an international acknowledgement of Malaysia's expertise in airport management."

ISG has a 20 year concession with the Turkish Government which involved the design-build-operate of a new integrated domestic and international terminal to cater for 25 million passengers per annum (mppa). The brand new international terminal was launched in October 2009.

MAHB's Managing Director, Tan Sri Bashir Ahmad said "MAHB sits on the Board of ISG and is actively involved in the management of the airport. Future developments that will be required during the concession period include the second runway and further development of the terminal to cater for passenger growth of 35-40 mppa by 2028."

ISGIA has established itself as the fastest growing and third largest airport in Turkey handling 11.6 million passengers in 2010. Under the new management, the traffic in ISGIA has more than doubled since its inception. Currently 26 airlines operate from ISGIA to a total of 55 destinations (29 domestic and 26 international destinations)

Since its inception, ISGIA along with the airport management company ISG, has received several awards including:

· World's Best Airport

ISGIA received the "Best Airport" award from World Low Cost Airlines Congress.
