KLIA – 19 YEARS OF SERVING THE NATION

KUALA LUMPUR – KL International Airport (KLIA) celebrates its 19th anniversary this year and the airport continues serving the nation; growing and flourishing each year as the nation’s premier gateway and national icon.
In 2016, KLIA saw an increase of 7.6% growth in passenger traffic movements as compared to 2015. In fact, in 2017, KLIA’s growth has improved even further when compared to last year. As at June this year, KLIA registered 15.8% growth with KLIA Main Terminal growing by 23.3% and klia2 by 7.2%. Both terminals combined handled approximately 28 million passenger movements in the last six months.
In his speech during the anniversary celebration held at KLIA today, Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports shared that KLIA’s current achievement is definitely the result of the hard work and dedication from the whole airport community.
He said, “On behalf of Malaysia Airports, I would like to thank the airport community for contributing to KLIA’s success thus far. As Malaysia Airports continues its efforts in enhancing total airport experience to transform into a service leader, we are counting on the continued support from all our partners here.”
In ensuring that every visitor at KLIA will have a comfortable and joyful experience at the airport that will leave them with a positive and lasting impression, Malaysia Airports, under the Total Airport Experience (TAE) strategic pillar outlined in its five-year business plan, Runway to Success (RtS2020) has undertaken several initiatives to provide its visitors with world class services and facilities.
“Earlier this year, we launched the KUL VIP Access. KUL VIP access is a premium service that gives departing and arriving passengers options to fast track lanes for check-in, customs and immigration, transportation services, as well and buggy and concierge services. For travellers who have connecting flights, the new KLIA-klia2 Terminal Transfer service which provides a free 24/7 shuttle service making it more convenient for passengers to move from one terminal to the other. In fact, the free shuttle service route also includes a stop at the Long Term Car Park and can be enjoyed by everyone – not just travelling passengers,” he added.
Malaysia Airports is also in the midst of upgrading its facilities at KLIA. Apart from improving and opening additional surau or Muslim prayer rooms, the airport operator has also embarked on a major refurbishment project for 131 toilets in KLIA. This project which will be completed in phases and is due to complete fully by 2020, will see the new toilets be equipped with features that will allow for easier maintenance and are more user friendly. Among the features, passengers can expect are individual automatic hand dryers, as well as built-in bidets and floor blowers. Three of these new toilets have already been opened for public use and the airport operator is targeting to complete a total of 33 units by the end of 2017.
Apart from that, as a country rich with culture and heritage and to further support Malaysia’s tourism industry, Malaysia Airports has also collaborated with several state tourism bodies under its Joyful Malaysia initiative. Since January 2017, every month will see a tourism showcase from the various states in Malaysia where Malaysian local culture, cuisine and destinations are highlighted.
Malaysia Airports also remains vested in the growth of its airline partners and will continue their efforts to strengthen KLIA’s position as a regional hub. The good growth experienced in the last six months was also contributed by the arrivals of new and returning airlines operating in KLIA. This included the return of Philippine Airlines, as well as new airlines such as JC Cambodia, Uzbekistan Airways, Thai Smile, US-Bangla Airlines and Cathay Dragon.
As an airport operator, Malaysia Airports is very appreciative of all other initiatives by the airport community to increase efficiency of operations at the airport such as the opening of additional counters for check-in by Malaysia Airlines, as well as immigration counters. During the event, Badlisham congratulate the KLIA Immigration Department on their recent achievement when KLIA was announced as the World's Best Airport for Immigration Services Award in 2017 by Skytrax.
Badlisham ended the speech by sharing his aspirations with the KLIA community, “I would like to call upon all our staff and agencies in KLIA to continue and maintain this commitment in providing passengers the best service towards ensuring joyful experience. My biggest appreciation goes out to all of you for ensuring our customers and passengers continue to receive the best treatment and thank you for your unyielding passion to constantly strive for excellence, and for all the contribution, you have made thus far.”

In commemorating its 19 years of achievement and showing its appreciation to passengers, KLIA feted five lucky passengers in a simple yet special reception. The lucky passengers were chosen based on these criteria:
i. The 77 millionth Passenger at klia2 (Domestic)
ii. The 125 millionth Passenger at klia2 (International)
iii. The 103 millionth Passenger at KLIA (Domestic)
iv. The 269 millionth Passenger at KLIA (International)
v. The 573 millionth Passenger at KLIA (Overall)
