MALAYSIA AIRPORTS KICKING OFF ITS 25TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION WITH A REMARKABLE MILESTONE

SEPANG - Malaysia Airports kicking off its 25th anniversary celebration today and continues to play an important role in the development of the nation’s aviation industry. Since its corporation in 1992, Malaysia Airports has received recognitions in both, domestic and international arena, cementing its position around the globe as one of the best airport operators in the world.


Throughout the 25 years, Malaysia Airports has been fortunate to enjoy many successes. KL International Airport (KLIA) is among the top 25 busiest airports in the world, climbing up by leaps and bounds from the days of Subang Airport when the airport operator only had 16 million passengers a year. Last year, KLIA surpassed the 50 mppa mark and grew by 7.6% to nearly 53 mppa. In fact, in January 2017, KLIA registered double digit growth of 15.3% when compared to the same period last year.


With the opening of its second terminal, klia2, KLIA is on the road to strengthening its position as a premier hub within ASEAN. The addition has increased the whole airport system’s capacity to 75 mppa and is further promoting growth of its airline partners by providing seamless transfer connectivity between low cost and full service carriers. Since the opening, transfers traffic has tripled from 0.5 million to 1.5 million. Combined, both terminals cater to more than 60 airlines, serving more than 120 direct destinations and more than 1,000 indirectly.


Malaysia Airports also take pride in the robust growth at other international and domestic airports around Malaysia. In the last 20 years, growth at most of these airports either doubled or tripled – but more importantly, it is still continue to grow. In 2016, Penang and Kota Kinabalu International Airports registered growth of 6.8% and 10.5% respectively. This growth has been facilitated by various capacity enhancements, efficiency measures and consolidation of operations that we undertook in the past years. 


Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, Managing Director of Malaysia Airports shared his aspiration on Malaysia Airports five-year business plan, Runway to Success 2020 (RtS2020), The achievements in the last 25 years have been considerable but we are not living in the past. It is to the future that we must look to ensure the sustainability and relevancy of our business. Our five-year business plan, Runway to Success 2020 was formulated to achieve this very aim. The strategic pillars identified are closely aligned to our mission of creating joyful experiences by connecting people and businesses with the ultimate aim of fulfilling our vision in becoming a global leader in creating airport cities.

 

“As a service provider, our greatest asset is of course you, our people. In order to achieve our mission and vision, we need to adhere to the core qualities that will help ink our reputation in the hearts and minds of the people we serve. We have been acknowledged as an Employer of Choice with one of the best career progression programmes but my hope is to see Malaysia Airports soar even higher in terms of human capital development,” he added.

 

At the same event, Malaysia Airports’ Chairman, Tan Sri Dato’ Sri Dr. Wan Abdul Aziz Wan Abdullah also launched the 25th anniversary celebration by revealing some of the exciting celebratory programmes that will mark the important milestone and will encompass all its stakeholders throughout the year such as a 25th anniversary dinner, commemorative souvenirs, commemorative mural, 25-day countdown lucky draw, and nationwide celebration at all airports such as the 25 Fruit Fest for our staff. Malaysia Airports will also continue to celebrate its partner’s contribution through its annual KLIA Awards, Concessionaires Conference and 25th Anniversary Golf Tournament.

To further enhancing its contribution to the nation as well as creating joyful experiences, Malaysia Airports will be celebrating SEA Games at its airports and collaborating with state tourism bodies all over Malaysia to bring Malaysian culture to the airport. Malaysians can also look forward the new customer experience features and services at KLIA such as the KUL VIP Access service, a new customer experience centre, children’s playground and vertical hanging garden and also inaugural KLIA Aeropolis marathon, as well as interesting programs on mainstream media featuring Malaysia Airports. There will also be some 25th Anniversary retail and culinary promotional events during the year.

During the kick-off, Malaysia also launched its 25th anniversary theme song called “Jutaan Jiwa” which was composed especially for the anniversary celebration as an embodiment of Malaysia Airports purpose and aspiration in the years to come. “Jutaan Jiwa” is an instrumental collaboration between Malaysia Airports and the famous Malaysian indie alternative rock band, HUJAN.

Approximately 800 Malaysia Airports staff, airline and business partners, relevant stakeholders and members of the media attended the kick-off of 25th anniversary celebration which was held at the Roof Terrace, Level 5, KLIA.
